Don't be deceived by the name – this site is not for outgoing outdoors-lovers. Trek Passions is a dating site for Trekkies and their ilk. It hosts a community of singles looking to meet fellow geeks, and it doesn't matter what kind of geek you are. is one of Passions Network's niche sites and it exists primarily to meet sci-fi nerds' need for a community of indivduals who are passionate about their own unique geek interests.

Geek-friendly Profile Creation

I signed up for an account because like the rest of humanity, I spend most of my waking hours online. I thought it would be a good idea to meet people who might be as into sci-fi as I am. Filling out my details turned out to be a fun activity by itself. I just had to indicate the following: Title – a catchy headline; Description – a short bio where you're encouraged to state your favorite Science Fiction character.

Since this a community, joining an interest group is also encouraged. Joining a group is nothing more than ticking from a pre-selected box of geek interests – JRR Tolkien, Asimov, Clarke, Douglas Adams, and Steven Spielberg among many others. A member is limited to joining only 8 groups and must be aware that joining any of the groups means you consent to appearing in search engine searches. Joining one helps you connect easily with people who have the same exact interests, and the same thing applies with its Current Events feature where you pick nerd events in which you wish to participate.

Membership Options and Social Features offers a free basic account. You can do any of the following at no cost:

- add someone to your friends list
- send vistual gifts
- send virutal flirts (smooch, throw cold water, etc)

Also, you can browse profiles and photos, read forums and blogs, explore interest pages and see who's online. When I'm feeling flirty, I send about 10 smooches to different members and have noticed that some people do not permit flirting. I thought it was unfair so I tinkered with my profile settings and found out that you can customize your preferences.

Although the site allows a considerable amount of social functions on a free account, a paid subscription is also on offer for those who want to do more than send smooches. For $4.95, you can upgrade your account to a 'Banner-Ad-Free Network-Wide Access'. This lets you send emails and provides access to some of the network's other niche sites.

Overall Impressions

I was delirious when I came across because I thought it signaled the end of my woeful online social life. I don't really check my Facebook regularly because I'd rather interact with folks I met online who know my language. I like that a site like this exists because where it really succeeds is in having all these groups, events, and forums that effectively gather people who are very interested and knowledgeable in all things geek.

While I enjoyed the site's specialized pages (Forums & Blogs, Videos & Fun Stuff), I was underwhelmed by the level of involvement. I suspect it has to do with the modest size of the site's member database. Another thing: Although it doesn't completely ruin the overall experience, the site's design is largely unappealing. Before I upgraded to a paid membership, I noticed the overbearing presence of ads all over the site. The site even has ads for rival dating sites!

I'm not too keen on it, but I would keep my membership at Trek Passions if only because I've met several nice guys and girls on there with whom I've managed to chat until the wee hours of the morning. I've chatted with maybe two girls who were up for more than Tolkien talk, but they've been elusive lately, not logging in as frequently as I'd prefer. I guess they, too, have issues with the site's lackadaisical appearance. A friend from the site actually pointed me toward another nerd dating site called and as tedious as it sounds to make another dating profile, I just might try that one out to see if it's any better.
